... the Estuary Partnership's Outdoor Education Programs.
Stewardship for the Estuary Partnership means engaging citizens of all ages in Columbia River learning and care by providing hands-on experiences and lots of information. We believe this investment is the only way to sustain the work of hundreds of partners restoring habitat and species, protecting water quality and reducing contamination.
We start with students – in K-12 schools from the Bonneville Dam to the Pacific Ocean. Our students learn in class and get outdoors to apply what they learn. They test water quality, reconfigure their schoolyards and reduce runoff, paddle in our Big Canoes, remove invasive species and plant native trees and shrubs. Students understand what they experience; children today are outdoors significantly less than a generation ago. Not only are they not experiencing it, they are not comfortable being in it. We know that we retain over 75% of what we experience compared to 25% of what we read. For our students, the Columbia River becomes a living laboratory and the lessons they have and the experiences we give will last a lifetime.
Private funds support 50% of our K-12 and volunteer programs.
We need your support. Demand for our Outdoor Education Programs increase every year. Since 2000, we have reached over 130,500 students - 53% of whom are at-risk kids - and worked with over 1,400 teachers developing and delivering 50 different inquiry-based curricula to meet their benchmark requirements.
The stewardship we build lasts a lifetime.
